As winter draws in for much of the Northern Hemisphere, and people spend more of their time inside, indoor air quality is climbing up the agenda as an important consideration when it comes to COVID-19.
We wrote previously about how UltraViolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) can help clean indoor air. An article this summer from McKinsey goes into more detail about whether HVAC Systems can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
As rightly mentioned in the above McKinsey article, there is a very serious threat of the spread of Coronavirus through HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems. These systems continuously recirculate indoor air to condition (basically to cool or heat) the working and living spaces in many commercial and residential buildings.
Because of the continuous recirculation, the same contaminated air might be inhaled by the occupants. One way to overcome this problem is to flush out the contaminated air with the outside fresh air.
Unfortunately cooling fresh air is a very expensive affair and many buildings will restrict the amount of outside fresh air, choosing recirculation instead to save on power consumption.
